Russia launches 1st standalone private 5G net on local software

MOSCOW, Oct 4 (PRIME) -- The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) has unrolled Russia’s first standalone private 5G network running on local software on the 4.8–4.99 GHz range, a spokesperson for the National Technology Initiative (NTI) told PRIME on Monday.

“The solution exploits the software program designed by specialists of the NTI’s center of excellence Technologies of Wireless Connection and Internet of Things for the network core and the base station supporting the OpenRAN technology,” the NTI, which participated in the development, said.

The center’s head Dmitry Lakontsev said that the specialists made “a real 5G call” via the Voice over New Radio (VoNR) technology to demonstrate operation of the network on September 20. They used a Huawei P40 smartphone, available on the open market.

The solution is designed for private networks and can be used to create connection infrastructure at enterprises.
